Do I need a GS1 number for my barcode?
Short answer
For goods sold in somebody else's shop: yes. Retail GTINs are issued solely by GS1, and only that makes your number unique worldwide. For internal purposes such as stock, inventory or your own till you do not need one.
When you need GS1
As soon as a point-of-sale system you do not own has to recognise your goods. Retailers require a GTIN from a number range assigned to you. Making one up does not work: an invented number may already belong to another product, and then a stranger's article and price appear at the till.
When you do not
For anything that stays inside your own operation. Shelves, crates, tools, files, samples. Code 128 covers that; it takes arbitrary characters and answers to no issuing body. Selling directly from your own shop or market stall works without one too, as long as no external system has to read the number.
What Barvio does here, and what it does not
Barvio issues no GTINs and never will. It validates the check digit of the number you enter and prints exactly that. Where the number comes from is your business, and that is not laziness but the only honest answer: a tool that generates a GTIN for you generates a problem for you.
